Underground beauty: Altinbeshik Cave
Altinbeshik Cave, located in the Ibradi (Aydinkent) district of Antalya, is the third-largest underground lake cave in the world and the largest in Turkey. The cave's length is 2,500 meters. Formed many years ago, the cave holds great historical and geographical significance. The stalactites, stalagmites, and white travertines inside the cave enchant visitors, both local and foreign, every year.
The cave, located within the Altinbeshik Cave National Park, was formed in the karstic structure of the Taurus Mountains and is situated at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level. The largest of the travertines in this three-tiered cave reaches a height of 44 meters. The water in the cave can reach depths of up to 15 meters. The temperature inside the cave remains around 16-18 degrees Celsius year-round.
Altinbeshik Cave was discovered by locals in 1966 and later documented by Dr. Temucin Aygen. Subsequently, numerous foreign scientists studied and conducted research in the cave from 1966 to 1995. Following these efforts, the cave was declared a national park in 1994. However, research in the cave continues to this day.
Why is the cave named Altinbeshik?
The cave gets its name from a natural rock bridge located in the middle of the first floor of the cave, which consists of a natural rock block. The cave and the hill above it were named Altinbeshik because the bridge is yellow due to minerals inside, and its shape resembles a cradle.
What can you do?
Since it's an underground lake cave, it can only be traversed by tour boats. Therefore, when you come here, besides learning, you can also enjoy yourself. Additionally, the area surrounding the cave is a national park surrounded by pine forests, where animals such as wolves, wild boars, foxes, mountain goats, and various plant species reside. Nature walks around the national park are also among the activities you can do when you visit.
