A Gateway to Serenity in Kaleiçi: Antalya Mevlevihane
Located in Kaleiçi, also known as the Old City, in the Muratpa?a district of Antalya, there are numerous historical structures dating back to the Seljuks and Ottomans. One of these is the Antalya Mevlevihane...
Situated in the area where the Yivli Minaret and Yivli Minaret Mosque are located, this establishment occupies a high terrace and has a rectangular shape measuring 13.45 x 22.32 meters. There is no inscription indicating when this two-story building was constructed, but it is estimated to have been built in 1255 under the rule of Anatolian Seljuk rulers, possibly by I. Alaeddin Keykubad. Though the exact history is unclear, it is known to have served as part of the palace complex during the Seljuk period. However, some sources suggest it was built as a Mevlevihane or lodge, and it is even considered one of the first four Mevlevihan in Anatolia. In the 16th century, the Ottomans also used it as a Mevlevihane. Since then, the building has undergone various renovations, with restoration completed in 2018, after which it was opened as the Antalya Mevlevihane Museum.
What is Mevlevilik?
Mevlevilik is a Sufi order established after the death of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi in the 13th century. It is based on the spiritual teachings of Mevlana, who was a poet, mystic, theologian, philosopher, Sufi, and scholar. Mevlevilik, founded to spread his teachings and tolerance among people, includes principles such as love for God and humanity, serving humanity, and elevating humanity spiritually and morally.
What's in the Antalya Mevlevihane Museum?
The museum includes the Mevlevihane Hammam, the tombs of Nigar Hatun and Zincirk?ran Mehmet Bey. It is believed that the hammam was built in the 13th century for private use, and during the Ottoman period, it was used as the Mevlevihane Hammam. Additionally, the tombs of Mehmet Bey's son Ali and the sheikh of the Antalya Mevlevihane, Mustafa Dede Efendi, are also located here.
The museum features depictions of Mevlevilik, informational panels, Mevlevi attire, and items belonging to the dervishes. Sema rituals are also performed here at specific times. Furthermore, seminars, classes on Islamic philosophy and thought, Sufi music concerts, readings of the Masnavi and Divan, and other cultural events are organized at this Mevlevihane. It is especially recommended to visit the museum on days when these performances and events take place.
