In Alanya, a Seljuk heritage masterpiece: Kizilkule

Alanya is one of the districts located to the east of Antalya... This district, which attracts attention with its tourist facilities, beaches, nature, and historical sites, has many places worth seeing. Foremost among these is Kizilkule.

Alanya, which is a peninsula, has many important historical buildings. Especially, the historical buildings left by the Anatolian Seljuks in these lands are quite numerous. Kizilkule is one of them. This historical structure, which is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about Alanya, is practically the symbol of the district. The tower has such a magnificent architecture that it mesmerizes those who see it.

Why is it called Kizilkule?

Kizilkule was built in 1226 by the order of the Anatolian Seljuk Ruler I. Alaaddin Keykubat to the architect from Aleppo, Ebu Ali Reha el Kettani. It is possible to see the name of the architect on the north facade inscription, and the name of I. Alaaddin Keykubat on the south facade inscription. This structure was built to protect the trading port and to prevent attacks from the land to the fortress. Limestone was used in the lower part and red brick in the upper part during the construction of the tower. Because of the color of this red brick, the structure was named "Kizilkule".

Kizilkule has five floors: ground floor, entrance floor, mezzanine, open floor, and open terrace, with a diameter of 29 meters and a height of 33 meters. The tower underwent repairs from 1951 to 1953, and in 1979, its ground and first floors started to be used as an Ethnography Museum. In this museum, carpets, kilims, looms, clothing, kitchen utensils, scales, lighting devices, yurt tents, and other items of the region are exhibited.

The other floors of the museum are also open to visitors. The view from the top floor is especially beautiful... When you come here, go up to the top floor and enjoy the magnificent view of Alanya.

How to get there?

Kizilkule is located in Alanya Harbor, on ?skele Street. It is easy to reach because it is close to the city center; you can come here by car. However, if you are looking for a fast, safe, and comfortable way to get there, renting a chauffeured car would be a good option.

Kizilkule is open to visitors every day from 08:30 to 17:30. Admission is charged. Turkish citizens can enter the museum for free with a museum card.
