The Tranquil Paradise of Aegean and Mediterranean: Koycegiz
Koycegiz, renowned for its nature and history, also captivates with its tranquility. Being Turkey's 16th serene city (Cittaslow), this feature makes it a must-visit for those seeking a peaceful holiday.
Located at the confluence of the Mediterranean and Aegean, Koycegiz is a district of Mugla. The history of this district dates back to around 3400 BC, situated north of Lake Koycegiz. Throughout history, it has been inhabited by various civilizations including the Carian, Scythian, Assyrian, Ionian, Dorian, Achaean, Persian, Hellenic, Seleucid, Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman. During the Carian period, particularly around 1000 BC, it prospered in trade, notably with the city of Kaunos. Historical landmarks from this period such as the Susan and Harab castles, Acropolis, and temples can still be found in the district. Among the historical sites worth visiting in this district, the ancient city of Kaunos holds significant importance. Kaunos, an ancient city belonging to the Carian civilization, can be reached by boats departing from Dalyan or via the village of Candir.
Where Does the Name Koycegiz Come From?
The origin of this name is based on a legend. According to the legend, the valley where the lake is located was flooded by water. After this catastrophe, when only a few houses and people were seen on the eastern shore of the lake, it was believed that the entire city had submerged, leaving only one Koycegiz on the shore. It is still believed that there is a sunken city under this lake.
What to Do?
Lake Koycegiz, a freshwater lake, is located in the center of the district. There are restaurants, cafes, and walking paths around the lake. Here, you can take walks and take breaks at these establishments when you get tired. We especially recommend trying the local freshwater fish.
Although the center of the district does not have a seaside, it is not far from the sea and beautiful bays. Especially, you should definitely visit Ekincik Bay, just half an hour away from Koycegiz. At this bay, which has a long beach, crystal-clear sea, and a yacht harbor, you can swim, surf, and water ski. Entry to Ekincik Bay, operated by the municipality, is free, but you need to pay for sun loungers and umbrellas.
Koycegiz is famous for its magnificent nature covered with endemic liquidambar trees, citrus orchards, and honey. Here, you can also find the Sandras Mountain, an extension of the Taurus Mountains. The high parts of the mountain are home to Turkey's oldest protected monument trees. This region, along with the Agla Plateau, becomes the choice for those who love hiking and camping.
The village of Sultaniye in Koycegiz stands out for its health tourism. The village attracts tourists with its Hot-Cold Thermal Springs. Additionally, Yayla Village in the district and Gokceova to the north are also popular for safari tourism. The Candir Koy region is known for its mud baths and facilities. Besides these, when you come here, we recommend you to definitely see the Dalyan Channel, mud baths, Waterfall, and Yuvarlakcay.
