Kayaköy: an abandoned ghost village in Fethiye

Kayaköy is located in the Uzunyurt neighborhood of Fethiye district in Mugla. Situated on the slope of a hill, this completely abandoned village attracts considerable attention from both local and foreign tourists.

Those who visit Fethiye do not leave without stopping by Kayaköy, and upon seeing it, they are amazed. Half of the historical buildings in Kayaköy are in ruins. In this article, we will tell you everything you are curious about this village and why it was abandoned.

Once a picturesque and lively village, Kayaköy has now become a ghost village with no sound. Here, houses, religious sites, and schools stand empty. This sad state of the village is based on a tragic migration story.

Kayaköy, known as "Levissi Village" among Greeks and "Tasliköy" among Turks, was built on the ruins of Lycian settlements dating back 3000 years before Christ. Greeks lived here until 1922 when, due to population exchange, they had to emigrate to Greece. After that, Turks coming from Greece were settled in Kayaköy. However, Turks also left the village due to the lack of stables and the absence of a river near the village. Thus, the village turned into a ghost town with no inhabitants.

Kayaköy is a place where you can take beautiful photos thanks to its magnificent atmosphere. The 3,500 houses located in the narrow streets of the village seem to be carved out of stone. Unfortunately, the doors, windows, and roofs of these beautiful stone houses were destroyed in the 1957 earthquake on the island of Rhodes. When you visit, you can explore these partially ruined houses. The village has two churches - Upper and Lower - and 14 chapels. There is also a school building divided into two parts for girls and boys. You can also visit these places and shop at the shops selling handmade items in the village.
