One such place is the ancient city of Knidos, located at the tip of the Resadiye Peninsula in the Datca district of Mugla. Its history dates back to the 13th century BCE. Originally situated on the Cape of Dalak, in the present-day Burgaz area, the city was later relocated to its current location in the mid-4th century BCE due to trade reasons. The old settlement was called Stadia, but later this name was transferred to the peninsula. Due to the beauty of the landscape in this ancient city, which many civilizations claimed, the city was initially ruled by the Carian people. However, its heyday came when the city was founded by the Dorians, who migrated from Thrace in the 1st millennium BCE. After that, Knidos alternately came under the rule of Spartans, Lydians, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines.
From the 4th century BCE, Knidos became an important center for art, religion, culture, and healthcare. It was also used as a medical center and a place for scientific research, attracting many scholars. The city was home to prominent architects, mathematicians, philosophers, artists, and physicians. Additionally, Knidos served as a trade route for maritime transport, and it laid the groundwork for early examples of democracy. Wine was exported from this city to Athens, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea.

When visiting this ancient city, which is an open-air museum, you will first encounter a small theater with 10,000 seats. A large theater with 20,000 seats is located at the top of the city. Additionally, you can see an amphitheater, ancient harbor, gymnasium, stepped street, Temple of Dionysus, ancient ports, Temple of Doric, Temple of Apollo and its altar, round temple, Temple of Corinth, sundials, and assembly building. After exploring, you can swim in the sea. The place where the ancient city is located has beautiful beaches. Here, you can enjoy the sea, so it is recommended to bring suitable beach attire. Additionally, the sunset view here is simply stunning. If you come closer to closing time, you can witness the sunset.
What are the visiting hours?
This site is open for visits year-round. In winter, from October 1st to April 1st, it can be visited from 08:30 to 17:30. In summer, from April 1st to October 1st, it is open from 08:30 to 19:30. The ticket office closes half an hour before the end of the working day. Visiting the ancient city of Knidos is subject to a fee. Foreigners can visit by paying 5 euros. However, museum card holders, who are citizens of the Republic of Turkey, can visit for free.
How to get to the ancient city of Knidos?
This ancient city is located at the confluence of the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, in the Mahalle Yaz?burun area, in the Tekirburun region. It is approximately 33 kilometers from the center of Datca. The nearest airport is in Dalaman. Additionally, you can come here from Bodrum Airport. You can get here by private car or public transportation from the center of Datca or by sea taxi. However, if you want to arrive conveniently, quickly, and comfortably, it is best to rent a car with a driver.
