Bodrum, a tourist destination in Mugla, stands out for its natural and historical beauties. In this paradise of a town, there's a place recognized worldwide for its beauty and significance: the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. While only a small part remains standing today, it's displayed to visitors as an open-air museum. When you visit Bodrum, make sure to see this mausoleum.
What are the features of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus?
This mausoleum was commissioned by Queen Artemisia for her husband and brother, King Mausolus, in 353 BC. Some sources also suggest it serves as the tomb of King Mausolus. The Mausoleum combines elements of Greek and Egyptian architecture. Its columns reflect Greek architecture, while its pyramid-shaped roof resembles Egyptian design. Made of marble, this mausoleum is a massive tomb. Subsequently, all large tombs like this one came to be called "mausoleums." The word "Mausoleum," derived from the Turkish name "Mozole," stems from King Mausolus's name. Unfortunately, this beautiful structure was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1500. The stones from the ruined mausoleum were used to build Bodrum Castle, while some parts were taken abroad. These pieces are currently exhibited at the British Museum.
