The symbol of Bodrum from the Middle Ages to the present day: Bodrum Castle

Bodrum attracts attention with its natural beauty and historical landmarks. In this tourist paradise, there are many historical sites to visit. One of them is Bodrum Castle, which has become a symbol of the city... Where is it located, how to get there, and what are its features? You will find answers to all these questions in our article. Bodrum Castle is located in the center of the tourist city of Bodrum in the province of Mugla. This fortress, built on a rocky promontory between two ports, was once called the Castle of St. Peter. The site where this fortress was built was previously an island in antiquity, and then it was connected to the mainland, turning into a peninsula. The fortress was built by the Knights of Malta, also known as the Knights of St. John, from 1406 to 1523. Cream-colored stones from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, destroyed by an earthquake in 1500, were used for construction. Bodrum Castle was built in the Gothic style and has a square base measuring 180 x 185 meters. Since the Knights of St. John represented various European countries, the fortress towers were built according to the architectural features of each country. The tallest of these towers is the French Tower, standing at 47.50 meters. In addition to this tower, there are also the Spanish (Serpents), English, Italian, and German towers in the fortress. After the fortress was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1523 as a result of the siege of Rhodes under the command of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a mosque was added to it, and the building of the Chapel inside the fortress was converted into the Suleymaniye Mosque. After the fortress was used as a garrison and prison from 1895, it was bombarded by the French and British during World War I in 1915. As a result, part of the fortress was destroyed, and it was abandoned. During World War II, the fortress was used as a military base for a short time, and since 1964, it has functioned as a museum.

What is in the fortress?

At the entrance to the fortress and on the walls, there are coats of arms and reliefs. In addition, the fortress has: a front yard, inner courtyard, northern moat, arsenal of port weapons, fortified trenches, port tower, inner entrance room, chapel, and water reservoirs. Among other structures, there are also a Turkish bath and minaret left by the Ottomans. We recommend visiting this fortress during your trip to Bodrum, as it is on the temporary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
