Like many fortresses, Marmaris Castle was built for defensive purposes. There is no precise information about when this castle was constructed. Herodotus of Halicarnassus (from Bodrum) mentions that the castle was built during the Ionian period around 3000 BC. The renowned 17th-century traveler Evliya Celebi also writes in his travelogue that the castle was built during the campaign of the Ottoman Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent to Rhodes in 1522 and was used as a military base during this campaign. During World War I, French warships fired shots at the castle's walls, causing damage. The castle was inhabited by the locals until 1979. From 1980 to 1990, the castle underwent restoration work. It was opened to visitors as the Marmaris Archaeology Museum in 1991. We highly recommend you to visit this museum during your trip to Marmaris, which has since attracted a large number of tourists.
