4,000-year-old treasure in Bodrum: Myndos Ancient City

Bodrum, one of Turkey's most popular tourist destinations, attracts attention not only with its natural beauty but also with its historical treasures shedding light on the past. One of these is the Myndos Ancient City located in Gumusluk. We have compiled all the curious information about this ancient city, which was an ancient Carian settlement.

The Myndos Ancient City, located in the Gumusluk district of Bodrum, Mugla province, is situated on the westernmost point of the peninsula. Myndos, located on the Bozdag hill, marks the meeting point of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

The Turkish pronunciation of Myndos is "Mindos," meaning "Worship to the Great Goddess." Founded by Mausolus in the 4th century BC, Myndos was a city known for its olive and wine cultivation in ancient times. In 640 BC, Myndos was ruled by the Leleges. After the Leleges, one of Anatolia's oldest civilizations, Myndos came under the rule of many civilizations, including the Persians, Rhodians, Halicarnassians, and Byzantines.

What's in Myndos?

Very few artifacts have survived from the ancient city, which existed until the end of the Byzantine period. Unfortunately, much of Myndos, which experienced a major earthquake in the past, is submerged underwater. Nevertheless, important structures from the past still carry the traces of history. The most significant of these is the twin-towered gate written by the city's founder, King Mausolus. This structure was part of a 7-kilometer-long wall that protected the city of Halicarnassus. It is known that many soldiers drowned here during the siege of the city by Alexander the Great. Additionally, you can see a Byzantine-era church and fortification walls here. Underground, you can see semi-covered mosaic traces, ceramic fragments, and columns.

When you find yourself in the Gumusluk district of Bodrum, be sure to visit this ancient city. Also, do not forget to visit the Bodrum Ancient Theater located nearby.

How to get to the Myndos Ancient City?

This site is open for visits every day and is free of charge. The Myndos Ancient City, located near Bodrum port, is easily accessible from the city center. If you don't have your own car or don't want to use public transportation, you can rent a chauffeured vehicle. Many prefer this option for its convenience, speed, and safety.
