Antalya has been home to many civilizations in the past. Each civilization has left significant landmarks in its region. In Antalya, where there are many ancient cities, there is one place you may not have heard of, but it's worth visiting: the Ancient City of Termessos. In this article, we will tell you about it. Where is it located, how to get there, what are its features? We will answer all these questions for you.
This is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Turkey. It stands out among other ancient cities because it has never been subjected to archaeological excavations and maintains this untouched characteristic. The Ancient City of Termessos is located near the Dö?emealt? district of Antalya. Previously, this region was called Pisidia. The city was founded by the Solymi, descendants of the Lycians, one of the oldest peoples of Anatolia, in the 7th century BCE. Alexander the Great sought to capture it in 333 BCE during his campaign to the east, but he failed. The sturdy walls of the city prevented him from doing so. These walls, it is said, were the only ones Alexander the Great could not overcome.
With diverse vegetation
In the ancient city of Termessos, you will find necropolises, structures, sarcophagi, temples, agoras, theaters, and many other significant monuments. It is worth noting especially that its theater is very impressive in its beauty. It is amazing that this Roman theater with 5000 seats has survived in good condition to this day.
There is also abundant vegetation here... During your visit to this ancient city, you can see many types of plants and pine forests. Coming here, you can also explore the amazing wildlife. Additionally, there are thermal springs within the city itself. Therefore, this area is included in the national park.
The Ancient City of Termessos is located on the summit of Mount Güllük, at an altitude of 1150 meters. Since this is a high-altitude location, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a unique view of Antalya. Especially beautiful photos can be taken when you are at the theater.
How to get there?
The Ancient City of Termessos is located 30 kilometers from the center of Antalya. It is quite difficult to get here without a car... Therefore, if you have your own car, it is best to come by it. If you do not have your own car or prefer not to drive, the best option would be to rent a car with a driver. It would be better to come to this difficult road accompanied by a driver who knows this region, has experience, and a professional approach.
Upon arrival, you will have to walk 500 meters and climb. Therefore, we recommend wearing sports shoes and comfortable clothing.
